What is an episode-contingent burst design?

It is an ESM / EMA design that zooms in when something emotionally important happens. Instead of only asking questions at regular moments, it fires a short burst of repeated assessments after an emotional episode is detected, for example several follow-up beeps every 10 minutes.

Why can traditional time-contingent ESM / EMA miss emotional episodes?

Time-contingent designs send surveys at fixed or random moments and are good for estimating broad mood trends across days or weeks. But emotional episodes often unfold within minutes or hours, so when beeps are several hours apart researchers may miss the emotional peak and the recovery process that follows.

What is the difference between threshold-based and event-based burst designs?

A threshold-based burst starts automatically when a participant's emotion rating at a regular measurement crosses a predefined threshold (for example, above 50 on a 0-100 scale), which makes detection more standardized. An event-based burst starts when participants log an emotionally meaningful event themselves, which gives them more control but depends on them remembering and choosing to report it.

Which burst design captures more episodes?

Threshold-based bursts detected more episodes, about 1.60 per day, compared with 0.39 per day for event-based bursts. Threshold designs actively check for episodes during regular prompts, whereas event-based bursts rely on participants noticing and reporting episodes themselves.

Do burst designs capture more intense emotions than regular ESM / EMA?

Yes. Both threshold-based and event-based burst designs captured emotional episodes with higher intensity than regular time-contingent measurements, bringing researchers closer to emotionally meaningful positive and negative moments.

How do you choose the right burst design for an ESM / EMA study?

There is no single best design. Choose threshold-based bursts when you need a standardized detection rule and many detected episodes and can define meaningful thresholds. Choose event-based bursts when you study clearly identifiable events such as conflicts, cravings, or panic, want participants to report events as they happen, and want lower notification burden. A hybrid design can combine regular notifications, automatic threshold triggers, and participant-initiated event buttons to improve coverage.
